Domain Hosting Basics
A domain
name is simply a name with a designation at the end of
it, such as .com, .net, .org, etc. When a company
hosts a domain name, that company programs and routes
the specific name via Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
Hosting a name typically coincides with other services
such as web hosting and email hosting for that domain.
In order for
a domain name to be hosted, the domain name needs to be
assigned "name server" addresses. For instance,
any domain name hosted by Prolynx Internet is assigned
our name server addresses of:
NS1.PROLYNX.COM
NS2.PROLYNX.COM
More
information can be found about assigning these numbers
to your domain name by clicking on "register a domain"
and "move your domain" in the upper left of this page.
The company
that you may have registered your domain name with will
inform the Internet's core routing servers (also known
as root or route servers) that your domain is being
hosted via a server at Prolynx Internet, located at
NS1.PROLYNX.COM and at NS2.PROLYNX.COM. The
root servers are basically a look-up table of names that
point to Name Servers which are assigned an IP
addresses.
When hosting
a web site, ftp server or email for a domain name, we
allocate hard disk space for your information and
program our servers and routers to allow the rest of the
world the ability to see your information as you see fit
and to send you email.
